Why do I need cross-site scripting protection?

If a hacker is able to successfully launch a cross-site scripting attack against your website, it could enabled them to perform a whole host of different actions on your website. These include being able to see any data that is transmitted to your website such as payment or personal information (even if you have SSL encryption implemented). Even if you do allow users to enter sensitive information or your site is just used for marketing purposes, cross-site scripting vulenerabilities could allow visitors to be re-directed to a fake website where hackers could conduct malicious activities such as installing malware.
